I'm not sure I really "love" this book, but I might tomorrow after I recover from the pain I felt for the characters in this story. I think the review given by Mollie Oleyar covers the story better than I could but I wanted to give credit to Ms. Kansale with a good rating. I was reading last night and looked at the clock and suddenly realized it was 4 a.m.!!! That is a good story when I get so engrossed in it I don't even notice time passing. It is definitely a harrowing story but the overwhelming theme is overcoming trials and holding onto love, and the main characters definitely did this. I'm afraid the hero might have an antisocial personality disorder because he tells so many lies so easily, but I'm willing to live in the fantasy that he was able to heal and become a good/honest person. I wish there had been a epilogue telling us they lived happily ever after, but that would have ruined the whole feel of the story, so I'll make one up for myself.Tags : Seize the Fire [Laura Kinsale] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Not your typical romance story. The hero is dark, complicated and probably needs a mood stabilizing drug. The heroine just needs to be loved. Fun combination
I found the audio version compelling but the heroine one of the most annoying, stupid ones among the many, many romance novels I have read. So many of the problems the h and h encounter are caused by her total lack of discretion and common sense. I also felt as though there was at least one loose end, not really explained. I won't insert a spoiler here. In general it's a truly preposterous story but the hero and his side kick hold it together and make you want to keep going. The author has that knack.
This is one of my favorite romance books, a definite keeper that I return to from time to time. It's a gritty story about two imperfect people at different ends of the spectrum. Sheridan is a man who is hailed as a hero despite himself. He is cynical and selfish but as the story progresses you start to realise why he us the man he has become. Olympia had been sheltered and kept In virtual solitude all her life and has a rosey and unrealistic view of the world. Their story us moving and sad and deals with the human consequences of war and conflict and the effects of PTSD.
It was a pleasure to watch the development of personalities of both of the protagonists. I could totally believe that they were the the way they were, and could also believe in the healing of their hurts. Personal growth is a difficult thing and rarely do I see an author that can really pull it off. This story had imagination, something that this genre has little of. I have read maybe six Laura Kinsale novels and I liked this one the most.
I love Laura Kinsale, the only romance author I read and re-read! I discovered her 20 years ago, I think, through The Dream Hunter, which is a truly beautiful live story. Then I moves to For My Lady's Heart, which is even better! So I thought I'd love anything from Ms Kinsale. Alas, I picked Seize The Fire... what a poor choice! The characters and the plot are not the believable. The lead female's character is so inconsistent that I simply cannot relate with her as the heroine of the novel. And the story line about this political instability in a small parch of land called the Oriens, it is not built well, as if it was to serve merely as an distant introduction to the story and nothing more. Sorely disappointed with this one.
Probably my favorite romance hero ever. Flawed, funny, and falling in love despite himself, a man who fights his own sense of honor but finds himself behaving honorably despite his worst intentions--what's not to love? If the heroine is flawed, that's realistic. It is all believable, and Ms Kinsale's detailed and unerring research into things as trivial as penguins and as important as political machinations is flawless as always. This is one of my very few Keepers. I would love to read a book about Sheridan Drake's early life, for he had some amazing adventures.
Sheridan Drake Honorable Knight of the Order of Bath, highly decorated sea captain, slave, thief, roué, cynic and suicidal madman from post-traumatic stress.
Olympia Francesca Marie Antonia Elizabeth Exiled Princess of Oriens, sheltered idealist, budding revolutionary, stubborn and highly self-conscious of her body image.
This is a world-wide tromp from Great Britain, France, Spain, South America, Kurdistan and back. A touch and go love story of deception, betrayal, incredible tenacity and humbling experiences.
After leaving his 20+ year naval career, Sheridan is a broken man, morally and mentally He’s cornered into helping the Princess get back to Oriens to start her revolution by the machinations of the British Government, his dead father’s crewel trick with his last will and testament and his father’s scheming ex-mistress.
Timid Olympia is the last person to start a revolution. She starts out small on the first ship they set sail on and instigates a mutiny. In the end, she fires the Oriens revolution. She learns the hard way that revolutions are bloody, vicious work and it damn near destroys her.
In the end, these two scarred and battered souls come together as one to create a great, breathtaking love.
Author’s Dedication This book is dedicated to the combat veterans of Vietnam. With respect, and love, and hope for healing.
