I have been looking for a new mystery series and have not been having much luck. I enjoy the cozy mysteries-the mysteries w/o a lot of torture and excessive violence. The problem is the genre has been flooded with low quality books. There are also some really great authors writing these mysteries, but it takes some searching. The M.C. Beat on books are terrific and I really enjoyed the Southern Sister books- of course the original Agatha Christie is the all time best.
I am excited about this book The Darling Dahlias and the Cucumber Tree. I almost didn't read it because of the title. Darling is the name of the small Alabama town the Dahlia gardening club ladies live and work in. The ladies are an eclectic group of interesting women. Great characters- quite a few to keep track of in a new book.
It's set in the 1930's and there's more than one mysterious storyline to follow . The author does a great job keeping the threads tied together. I will definitely read the next book!!

The Darling Dahlias and the Cucumber Tree Darling Dahlias Mysteries Susan Wittig Albert 9780425234457 Books Reviews

This author captures an era I've only heard tell of from my grandmother..... I will definitely read more about the Darling Dahlia's adventures... It's nice to be able to enjoy a good 'clean' book.
This is the first book of a new series by Susan Wittig Albert. It's set in the 1930s.

The 'Darling Dahlias' are members of a club consisting of a group of friends who love to garden. (Darling after the name of the town, and Dahlia after the name of the founder of the club.) They have inherited Dahlia's now rundown house and what had been a beautiful garden. As they begin to work on the place, now their clubhouse, they become involved with a ghost who haunts the gardens of the house, with an accident that turns out to be a murder, a friend who is accused of embezzling from the bank, and an escaped convict!

The people are fun to know, (even the grumps), and gossip about a possible bank failure, possible illicit affairs, and a stolen car runs rampant in the town.

Following the various women as they set about to solve the mysteries and pin down the gossip is intriguing and entertaining.

Different from the China Bayles stories, but just as good a read. I very much enjoyed it.
I have read every book in this series and started my daughter on them. I'm 73 and born in Oregon. Spent a lot of time with my grandparents. This book reminded me so much of how they did things in the house and garden. The sense of honor and community came through. Utterly, charming.
This easy-to-read book is set in a small Alabama town in 1930. The protagonists are a group of women who belong to a garden club in their town. These diverse women are also friends. The first in a new series by this author, the book involves several different mysteries which are treated in a light manner and solved by the end. The interactions of the garden club members among themselves and with other town people give the readers an introduction to their character, their position in the town, their personalities, and their morals. We get to see a nice slice of life in a small southern town the year after the 1929 financial crash. It's interesting to learn the prices of some grocery and other items, club dues, the cost of housing, as well as the cost of other things at that time. Overall, I enjoyed this book and will continue to read the series as the author releases the books.
This is the first in a new mystery series by Susan Wittig Albert set in the 1930's in Darling, Alabama. A group of ladies in the town participate in a garden club and have been recently bequeathed a cottage that they plan to use as their clubhouse. While we meet many characters from the town, the book focuses on three women in particular, Lizzy, who is single and is a legal secretary, Verna, a probate clerk who is a widow, and the mayor's wife, Ophelia. The ladies are concerned about maintaining their clubhouse in the light of the country's worsening depression and we also see some of their personal lives. Life in town gets interesting when a convict escapes prison, a car is stolen, and blonde bombshell and cosmetic counter girl, Bunny, goes missing. There is also something fishy happening at the bank, and rumors that the town ghost has reappeared at their clubhouse garden. Verna, Lizzy, and Ophelia get pulled into the mystery through different circumstances but end up working together to solve the case. I liked the story and the first book in the series is always a challenge to put together all of the back story and introduction of the characters. I have high hopes that the next in the series will be even better.
The 1930's was an unusually tough decade in which to live, even though Industrialization was well underway. In this book you are introduced to characters who are spoon-fed, work hard to afford a handful of modern conveniences, or are struggling for survival. The unity of the garden club, whether through friendship or only to serve the main purpose of the club, offers admiration for their efforts as gardeners, as well as amateur sleuths. Wittig Albert's research and historical references lends a masterful hand to story-telling. Enjoy reading about telephone party-lines, neighborhood beauty parlors, boarding houses, men's dominance as women more than cast their intellect in resolving issues containing many questions. Whether or not you guess the outcomes through the many twists and turns, you will be left with a feeling you had joined hands with the Dahlias through strength of friendship - I know I would go to bat for any one of the key characters any day.

Susan, if you read this, please keep writing this series just as many times as you did for China.
